Durga is at the cutting edge of online journalism, having been a part of the team that conceptualized and launched FirstPost, after leadership stints at both the Wall Street Journal India and Mint (for Livemint.com), and brings with her in depth understanding of what works and what doesn’t for news organizations in a medium that combines the best of all media – text, audio and video – and adds that one key element that sets it apart from all other forms of media – reader / consumer response, and she comes with a fine sense of products, journalism and business.

Context

When it comes to news, the Internet – more specifically Social Media – is setting the agenda, and defining the discussions. What are the opportunities for online-only news businesses in this situation, where role to data and analytics play, how can they be tracked and used, and how much of the editorial decision should they drive? What are the challenges faced in attracting and retaining readers?  Timing matters, but how does one know what the right time is? Can online new businesses be profitable at scale, and with magazine businesses in India apparently in trouble, what is the impact on the Internet? What do advertisers want from online news sites? Is advertising the only way out, or is there a possibility for a subscription based business to survive in India? Will users pay for content? What kind of content will they pay for?

Speaker Profile: Durga Raghunath – CEO, Firstpost.

Durga is the queen unorthodox hack overseeing a team of unorthodox hacks that brings out Firstpost every hour. She’s taught herself news, design and enough code to allow her to swing across many worlds. She spends a significant amount of personal money buying food and alcohol for her team. She studied Chemistry in her undergrad that she remembers very little of, Business at ISB that she remembers some of and Publishing at Columbia University that she remembers all of.

About #NAMA (http://www.namaconference.com)

The second edition of the #NAMA Conference will be held on June 28th 2013 in Mumbai, at the ITC Grand Central. This time, we’re primarily going to speak with people who are shaping the digital content business. Our Fireside Chat format (max 2 speakers + a moderator) has been created to help encourage deeper conversations, and raise it further with quality audience participation.

Our focus is on providing the audience with valuable insight on the decisions that are being made, why they’re being made, what developments are influencing them, and how they will impact the growth of the digital industry going forward. We provide #NAMA attendees with significant and varied learning about the digital ecosystem.

#NAMA is a conference with a healthy mix of ideas, thought leadership and with important operational questions being addressed, with fresh ideas being shared, and hopefully, defining a sense of directions in these uncertain times: a vision.

#NAMA2 is being organized by MediaNama, the premier publication on the evolution of India’s digital ecosystem, being held on June 28th 2012, at ITC Grand Central in Mumbai.
